Here comes the Grandfather of Fun

2009 July 9
Assuming fair weather, sometime next year something truly exciting will occur – the action RPG will evolve.  Game genres are continually evolving – Portal pushed along the puzzler, Gears of War quickened the third-person shooter, World of Warcraft made some sense out of the MMORPG – but the action RPG has been stubborn.  Games have come and gone for years – some of them legitimately good games – that haven’t bothered throwing a penny into the fountain.  Sometime next year – or the one after that – Blizzard will drop in a whole roll.
Don’t ask me the condition or year of any of those pennies.  And well, one may be covered in brown bubble gum and start with the word “monthly”.  But the rest will shine, sinking a little slower to the bottom of the fountain than you’d expect a penny to sink.  When they finally hit the bottom, you’ll stare at them with three other friends for hours and days on end.
Admit it, you’re excited too.

Assuming fair weather, sometime next year something truly exciting will occur.

The action RPG will evolve.

Game genres are always evolving – Portal pushed along the puzzler, Gears of War quickened the third-person shooter, World of Warcraft made some sense out of the MMORPG – but the action RPG has been stubborn.  Games have come and gone for years – some of them legitimately good games – that never bothered throwing a penny into the fountain.  Sometime next year, Blizzard will drop in a whole roll.

Don’t ask me the condition or year of any of the pennies.  And well, one may be covered in pinkish-brown bubble gum and start with the word “monthly”.  But the rest will shine, sinking a little slower to the bottom of the fountain than you’d expect pennies to sink.  When they finally hit the bottom, you’ll stare at them with three other friends for hours, days, and weeks on end.

Admit it, you’re excited too.
